The BTR-40B was the improved version of the original Soviet 4×4 armored personnel carrier, introduced in the mid-1950s. Unlike the open-top BTR-40, the BTR-40B featured a fully enclosed roof with hatches, which offered better protection for the crew and passengers against shrapnel and small-arms fire. Lightly armored but reliable and mobile, it could carry up to eight soldiers and was sometimes armed with a machine gun. It served with the Soviet Army, Warsaw Pact countries, and several export customers during the Cold War.
