The BTR-70 is a Soviet 8×8 armored personnel carrier introduced in the late 1970s as an improvement over the earlier BTR-60. It features better armor, a more powerful armament with a 14.5 mm heavy machine gun, and improved troop protection, though it retained the dual-engine layout which was considered unreliable and complicated to maintain. The BTR-70 saw widespread use across the Soviet Army and its allies, serving in Afghanistan and many other conflicts, and eventually led to the more modern and refined BTR-80.
