The Patrol Air Cushion Vehicle (PACV) was a hovercraft developed and deployed by the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Designed for riverine and coastal patrols, it could operate on water, mud, and land, offering unmatched mobility in the Mekong Delta’s challenging terrain. The PACV was armed with machine guns and grenade launchers, and its high speed and versatility made it ideal for reconnaissance, troop transport, and quick-strike missions. However, it was expensive, loud, and vulnerable to ground fire, leading to limited use. Despite its drawbacks, it was a pioneering step in military hovercraft operations.
